THE NEW AMERICANS PROJECT

What is "The New Americans"?
You can get to know your newest neighbors in a unique way through this new PBS miniseries. This powerful film looks intimately at the American dream through the eyes of immigrants and refugees — from Nigeria, India, the Dominican Republic, the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Mexico. The miniseries is a production of Kartemquin Films, the award-winning producers of Hoop Dreams. The entire 7-hour series was broadcast on PBS in March 2004.

New Americans Training Modules:

HarmonyWorks worked with Active Voice, a team of strategic communication specialists who put powerful films to work for personal and institutional change in communities, workplaces, and campuses across America, to “incubate” one of the three training modules that are being used nationally: the Building Bridges module. These three modules are now available in workshop formats for communities and organizations in order to learn more about the dynamics between the immigrant experience and that of the receiving communities. The sessions are designed to help translate the viewing experience into skills for action.

Servicing Communities Throughout Minnesota:
A primary goal of HarmonyWorks is to work in towns and cities throughout Minnesota where the population has dramatically grown due to the arrival of new immigrants. A project has grown in Willmar, MN in collaboration with the Center for Cross Cultural Health that exemplifies the intent to nurture grass roots involvement in a holistic community change process.

HarmonyWorks is a steering committee member of The New Americans Minnesota Community Campaign. For further information and a list of members please visit our web site at: http://newamericans.neighb.org/ or contact: Jose J. Cerra, jcerra@neighb.org, Chair.
